Welcome to GIS at Washington University in St. Louis. These are exciting times for the University’s GIS user community. We have fully implemented the University-wide ESRI license; we have hired new faculty and staff, and we are expanding our course offerings. GIS@WUSTL remains a work in progress.
Four years ago there was no GIS initiative, no University-wide site license, and no plans for any integrated GIS initiative. With the support of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of Arts and Sciences Ed Macias, we have come a long way but we still have significant work ahead of us.
I, (T.R. Kidder), have been appointed to head the University’s GIS initiative and will be working closely with Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences Dennis Martin and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Network Technology Services (NTS) Jan Weller to build up this critical 21st century technology. We are also working to make it accessible to students, staff, and faculty across the entire campus.
Over the next two years we will be working on four related areas of interest:
• Building the technological infrastructure • Providing GIS educational opportunities to WU community • Developing and expanding GIS as a research tool • Coordinating with the local and regional GIS community
Through the GIS initiative, Washington University in St. Louis is committed to being a leader in the use and teaching of spatial technologies. As I noted above, this is a great time to be involved in GIS on campus. I look forward to working with interested individuals, departments, research groups, programs, and schools to foster this technology and to make it something that is completely accessible, easy to use, and seamlessly integrated into the research and teaching mission of the University.
If you have ideas or suggestions about GIS or how we can improve our services please feel free to send me an e-mail ( trkidder@wustl.edu). |
